Come build singletrack on the “Wild Side” of beautiful and sunny Aruba. Interested in a three or six-month session as an equipment operator or trail crew leader building part a 54 km, bike optimized, shared use trail system? The terrain is rugged and dotted with awesome boulder fields and amazing cactus forests. Did I mention the crew house has a pool? All machines, fuel, trucks, utility e-bikes, tools, and health insurance are included. Potential applicants must be a professional level trail builder and be part of a trail company that has proper GL policy. Pay based on experience and proven ability to build sustainable, fun trails for mountain bikers, runners, and hikers of all ages and abilities.

The Trails Equipment Operator

 

The Trails Equipment Operator (TEO) is a full-time position responsible for trail machinery operations on the Aruba trail construction project. The TEO’s primary responsibility is making sure that enough machine work happens on a daily basis to supply a day’s work for the hand finish crew. This role supports the Director of Field Operations and Trail Crew Leader in keeping trail crews running as efficiently and safely as possible while ensuring the overall quality of the project.

 

This position requires excellent leadership skills and ability to motivate and support an effective team; strong skill set in sustainable trail work; ability to assess and manage risks; and organizational skills in logistics, time management and overall communications.  Must have proven ability to work with field crew team members and successfully lead by example.

 

- Assist crew leader as needed with training 2-4 crew members performing hand finish work on the trail.

- Support crew leader in developing daily work plans, help ensure that sustainable trail construction techniques are being implemented during construction activities.

- Conduct routine safety and fluid checks and follow maintenance schedules including greasing machine daily or as needed.

- Ensure project safety and practice effective risk management strategies.

- Build solid, sustainable technical rock features, multiple types of drainage structures, and any associated restoration such as decommissioning of social trails where feasible.

- Assist crew leader with project reporting when ask to ensure accurate and consistent timesheet management for their crew.

- TEO must be proficient in building sustainable flow-trails and technical rock features.

Trail Crew Leader

 

The Trail Crew Leader is a full-time position and requires a combination of sustainable trails construction and maintenance experience using hand tools and be versed in operating various pieces of equipment.

This position requires excellent leadership skills and ability to motivate and support an effective team; strong skill set in sustainable trail work; ability to assess and manage risks; and organizational skills in logistics, time management and overall communications.  Must have proven ability to work with field crew team members and successfully lead by example. This position ensures overall quality control prior to moving crew and tools forward.

Primary duties include: 

- Assist Director of Field Operations with initial classroom training of Aruban crew members.

- Conduct necessary field trainings including safe tool use and sustainable trail construction techniques.

- Supervise and lead a team of 2-4 crew members to perform hand finish work of the trail.

- Develop and relay daily work plans, conduct daily safety meetings, and ensure that sustainable trail construction techniques are being implemented during construction activities.

- Provide equipment and tool management tasks to ensure tools and project equipment are clean/sharp and in good working order and regularly inventoried at end of each day.

- Ensure project safety and practice effective risk management strategies.

- Serve as one of the technical experts on sustainable trails construction including rock work, building multiple types of drainage structures, and any associated restoration such as decommissioning of social trails.

- Assist with project reporting to ensure accurate and consistent timesheet management for their crew.

- Assist Equipment Operator as needed to provide a break for the operator while at the same time acquiring more on-the-job training hours on the machines if pre-approved.
